Born Lincoln Barrington Minott in Kingston, Jamaica, reggae star Sugar Minott got his first real career boost by apprenticing at producer Coxsone Dodd's Studio One in the late 1970s. After a series of Studio One singles and albums, Minott founded his own Black Roots label, and also concentrated on helping the youth in Kingston’s ghettos. A versatile performer equally at home in the dancehall, dub, lovers rock, and roots reggae styles, Minott has earned a respectable following abroad, most notably in England.
