Biography
For over a decade there have been two sides to the sonic narrative of Coastal. On the surface you'll find what you might expect from a San Diego native: smooth, soulful grooves that feel just as at home on the dancefloor as they do on a sunset drive down PCH. Go a bit deeper and you'll discover a starkly contrasting blend of experimental beats and gritty techno that trades the ocean waves for warehouse raves. This dichotomy has always been present. Early beginnings on soundcloud drew support from the likes of EDM legend RL Grime and eclectic LA collective Soulection. A post-pandemic shift saw the release of EPs Cohesion and SEA, contrasting bright electronic beats with deep soulful house. After teaming up with multi instrumentalist Shane Sato for 2023's jazz-heavy Airwaves (Deluxe), the pendulum swung back for ESTUARY, a full length journey of pop-influenced beats and techno. Heavier still is Les Char, a side project of unrelenting explosive techno backed by electronic mainstays Rob Swire and Dixon. 2025's Oasis EP enlists the musicianship of Mauricesax, Mitchell Solkov, Brad Croes and Shane Sato to further explore the relationship between jazz and house music first heard on SEA. The lineage is immediate: Secrets brings together a dense live arrangement similar to Afloat, while True Love develops on a classic Detroit sound calling back to Eternal Satisfaction and Incomplete.
