Biography
Russ Jay is a renowned tastemaker & musical creator. His avant-garde sound and flair powers through as a DJ, Producer and Musician. His formative years were spent fledging his nascent musical talents in the creative nether world of London’s ever-evolving underground dance music; a scene rich in DJ and club culture innovation, as well as a movement championed by his fêted father, Norman Jay MBE. Heavily influenced by the sounds of London’s pirate radio stations; Kool FM, Weekend Rush, Flex and Ice FM, he started to ‘dig the crates’ and by the age of 12 had debuted on West London’s pirate radio station, Marie FM. With releases on Strictly Rhythm, Toollroom, Salted Music, Sleavy Deep and Love Not Money Records, his career has taken him around the world gracing the decks in Antigua for Soul II Soul’s Back to Life tour, Good Times Sound System bus at Notting Hill Carnival, Ibiza clubland and beyond. These experiences and inspiration from different musical flavours have been fundamental to the creation of his sound, Steppers. Hosting and running a weekly residency at The Hoxton Pony for the past several years has brought to fruition his new brand/event, ride. Russ Jay is not only pioneering this new genre, which is richly punctuated with Hip-Hop, House and RnB, but giving you the beat to step to, step too.
