Basic Unit are Ben England and Rick Dallaway, an English drum & bass duo whose late-’90s work on Moving Shadow and beyond helped push the darker, more experimental edges of the genre. They debuted in 1997 with 12″ releases that blended tight, machine-like break science with cold atmospheres and intricate sound design before crystallising their vision on the Timeline LP. Originally released on CD in 1998 on the cult Nocturnal label, Timeline is a stark, minimalist tech-step landmark that draws equally on claustrophobic precision and the exploratory abstraction of experimental electronica — a record still revered by heads for its uncompromising intensity and cinematic sonic world. Though the album flew under the radar initially, it has resurfaced with fresh acclaim in recent years, and tracks like “Receive” remain fixtures on forward-thinking radio and selectors’ sets. Basic Unit’s work is defined by angular breakbeats, bleak tonal architecture, and a refusal to conform to dancefloor clichés — a singular, forward-leaning voice in drum & bass.
