About Hip-Hop/Rap
Born in the Bronx, New York City, in the 1970s, Hip-Hop emerged from dance parties where DJs such as Kool Herc used twin turntables playing the same record to extend percussive breaks for dancers. This vibrant culture quickly expanded to include MCs rhyming over beats, breakdancing, and graffiti art, providing a vital creative outlet for the community. The Sugarhill Gang's 1979 single, “Rapper's Delight,” introduced "hip-hop" and its vocalists, "rappers," to a global audience. Since then, Hip-Hop has evolved into a massively diverse and influential genre, becoming one of the world's most prominent music styles.
