The essence of outlaw country—hard living, broken hearts, and a life led rambling, among other things—is distilled in Waylon Jennings’ booming baritone. Born in Texas in 1937, Jennings dropped out of school at 16 with the dream of becoming a musician, and got his chance when rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Buddy Holly tapped him to play bass in his band. After giving up his seat for the infamous 1959 plane ride that would end the lives of Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens, Jennings established the honky-tonk roots of what would become his signature sound in the ‘60s with songs like the toe-tapping “Only Daddy That’ll Walk the Line.” But it wasn’t until the ‘70s that Jennings became the outlaw icon—a scruffy, towering cowboy in a wide-brimmed hat—of legend. Jennings made this version of himself known with 1973’s Honky Tonk Heroes, a record dense with electrifying twang and hardcore country that stood in stark contrast to the genre’s mainstream offerings in Nashville. While Music City might’ve had its issues with Jennings, he was in good company with songwriters, including fellow Texan Willie Nelson, a longtime collaborator he eventually joined in country supergroup Highwaymen—alongside Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson—in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Jennings passed away in the early 2000s, but his influence looms large over country music, particularly in its 2010s outlaw resurgence through artists like Sturgill Simpson and Chris Stapleton.

Pop singer Richard Marx was the king of adult contemporary in the late 1980s and early ’90s, when he amassed 14 Top 20 singles, including three No. 1 hits. • In addition to his own songs, Marx has written for other artists, including Luther Vandross, *NSYNC, Barbra Streisand and Vince Gill, and Keith Urban, among many others. His song with Vandross, 2004’s “Dance with My Father,” was a Top 40 hit that won Grammys for Song of the Year and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. • Marx was five when he began singing jingles for his father’s advertising company. When he was 17, a tape of his songs made its way to Lionel Richie, who encouraged Marx to move to Los Angeles. He got his start there as a backing vocalist and songwriter for other artists. • His self-titled 1987 debut album yielded a pair of No. 3 singles, a No. 2 hit, and a chart-topper with “Hold on to the Nights,” making Marx the first male artist to land four singles from a debut in the Top 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. His first single, “Don’t Mean Nothing,” featured Joe Walsh of the Eagles on guitar. • Marx’s second album, 1989’s Repeat Offender, was even bigger, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and putting five singles in the upper reaches of the Hot 100 chart—including the No. 1 hits “Satisfied” and “Right Here Waiting.” His father, Dick Marx, did horn arrangements, and his mother, Ruth Marx, sang backing vocals. • His subsequent albums and singles had a bigger impact on the Adult Contemporary charts, where 1991’s “Keep Comin’ Back,” the first single from Marx’s third album, held the top spot for four weeks. • Marx wrote and produced *NSYNC’s 2000 hit single “This I Promise You,” which reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. • In 2006, Marx toured as part of Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band, along with Sheila E, Edgar Winter, and Billy Squier. • Marx has continued to release albums at a steady pace, including 2020’s Limitless, which features songwriting and production from his son, Lucas Marx.

Billy Ray Cyrus is a left-handed guitar player, singer, songwriter, actor and philanthropist from Flatwoods, Kentucky. Raised in a musical background ranging from Southern Gospel four-part harmonies to Southern Rock with full-on smokin’ guitars and honky-tonk piano. Cyrus’s roots run deep in his Appalachian upbringing of Bluegrass, Country, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Rhythm and Blues, and all genres of music. This multitude of mastering and bending genres is exemplified by Cyrus’s Grammy, CMA, BET, VMA, Billboard and American Music Awards. Cyrus’s musical mantra is two fold. 1. “Music changes everything.” 2. When it comes to creating; “Don’t try to make music that fits inside the box, don’t try to make music that fits outside the box… make it like there is no box.” The multi Grammy award winning artist says, “Music is my motivation. Life is my inspiration. I bought a guitar and started a band for that reason.

Poor Mans Poison was formed in 2009 in Hanford, California. The members consist of Dustin Medeiros, Ryan Hakker, Mike Jacobs and Tommy McCarthy. All members except Mike Jacobs hailed from the edgy, guitar driven progressive rock band Done For Good (DFG). When DFG dissolved after one masterfully executed album “The Cycle,” the members parted ways. During that time Ryan began writing acoustic songs influenced by folk and bluegrass groups and 90’s acoustic rock. Within a few months Ryan recorded those tracks with Dustin engineering. Hearing the empty sounding tracks, Dustin borrowed a standup bass and recorded over the tracks. Tommy soon followed suit and picked up a mandolin for the first time. Mike also brought his guitar and songwriting skills into the picture. At this point jam sessions were happening on the front porch of Dustin’s house. Poor Man’s poison was asked to play a one off show at a local wine bar. The result was immediate acceptance securing the decision that they should continue. Over the next five years they put out 4 albums and 1 single. They grabbed attention in 2012 when they won the Texaco Country Showdown (a nationally televised competition with over 58,000 acts) and a prize of $100,000. Soon after they took a long hiatus and re-emerged with the song “Hell’s Comin’ With Me.” And have continued making music thanks to the help of fans and social media gaining much attention, while maintaining their entirely independent musical approach.

Lil Pump, whose real name is Gazzy García, is an American rapper and songwriter born on August 17, 2000, in Miami, Florida. He gained fame in 2017 with his breakout single "Gucci Gang," which peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified five-times platinum by the RIAA. Known for his energetic and rebellious style, Lil Pump is a prominent figure in the SoundCloud rap movement, characterized by its lo-fi production and internet-based promotion. His self-titled debut studio album, "Lil Pump," was released in October 2017 and included hits like "D Rose" and "Boss." The success of this album solidified his place in the hip-hop scene. Lil Pump's follow-up album, "Harverd Dropout," was released in 2019, featuring collaborations with high-profile artists such as Kanye West and Lil Wayne. Lil Pump's music often includes themes of hedonism and defiance, resonating with a younger audience. Despite facing criticism for his lyrical content and public behavior, he has maintained a strong fan base and continues to influence the genre with his distinctive sound and persona.

It’s difficult to understate the profound influence George Jones and the clear, classic twang of his unmistakable voice had on country music. Born in Texas in 1931, Jones got a hold of his first guitar at nine years old, was busking on street corners in Beaumont shortly after, and he didn’t stop singing until less than a month before he died at 81. In between, “The Possum”—an early nickname that stuck forever—was a mainstay on country music charts, starting with the blistering rockabilly of “White Lightning” in 1959, and helped define the sound of the genre. His name is synonymous with heartbreak, and songs like the lonesome “She Thinks I Still Care” have spurred many a tear to drop into many a beer. But his most famous song, “He Stopped Loving Her Today”—about a man who spends his life carrying a torch for the lover who left him long ago—has a capacity to devastate that is unrivaled in a genre that often trades in pain. Relationships were rich fodder for Jones, and his marriage to fellow country star Tammy Wynette led to a decades-long, often tempestuous, collaborative relationship that produced classic duets like the realist love story “Golden Ring.” Jones’ 1985 song “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes” pays tribute to his musical heroes—Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard—but rest assured, if there’s ever a country music Mount Rushmore, The Possum’s mug will be on it.

Dwight Yoakam has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide, and he is a 21-time nominated, multiple GRAMMY Award winner. He has 12 gold albums and 9 platinum or multi-platinum albums, with five of those topping Billboard’s Country Albums chart, and another 14 landing in the Top 10. Nearly 40 of Yoakam’s singles have charted on Billboard, with 14 peaking in the Top 10. Set for the summer of 2018, the LSD Tour, featuring Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, and Dwight, with support from LA rock outlier King Leg, unites three of music’s most celebrated and iconic voices on one epic cross-country package. Yoakam’s self-curated SiriusXM channel, titled Dwight Yoakam and The Bakersfield Beat ‘Where Country Went Mod’, will launch in late April. Featuring a band of bluegrass luminaries, this album boasts a collection of reinterpreted favorites from his catalogue, as well as a cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain.” In addition to his musical career, Yoakam is a formidable film and television actor who has appeared in over 40 feature films, including Sling Blade and Panic Room. In 2016, he recurred in David E. Kelley’s Amazon series, Goliath. Recently, he appeared in director Steven Soderbergh’s film Logan Lucky with Channing Tatum and Daniel Craig.

Country singer-songwriter Don Williams started his career in the ’60s as a member of Texas folk trio Pozo Seco Singers, whose hits included “Time” and “I Believed It All.” ∙ After signing a solo record deal with Jack Clement’s JMI Records, Williams had his first Top 5 Country hit with 1974’s “We Should Be Together.” ∙ He was extremely popular in the UK and had two Top 40 hits there in 1976, while avowed fan Eric Clapton landed a Top 40 US hit with a live version of “Tulsa Time.” ∙ Named CMA Male Vocalist of the Year in 1978, he also won ACM Single of the Year for his No. 1 Country hit “Tulsa Time.” ∙ Williams appeared as himself in the 1980 Burt Reynolds movie Smokey and the Bandit 2, and he contributed several songs to its soundtrack. ∙ During his career, he had 17 No. 1 Country hits, highlighted by 1980’s “I Believe in You,” which was his only Top 40 Pop hit. ∙ In 2010, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Buck Owens can take much of the credit for the electrifying twang that influenced generations of honky-tonking country artists. Although Alvis Edgar Owens Jr. was born in Texas in 1929, it was his adopted home of Bakersfield, California, that would become synonymous with his stage name. In the early ‘60s, Owens and His Buckaroos, alongside Merle Haggard, pioneered what became known as the Bakersfield Sound—a rollicking, rock ‘n’ roll-influenced style easily identifiable by its ripping, twangy guitar. It was a direct reaction to the string arrangements of Nashville country-pop, and the success of singles like 1963’s tragicomic “Act Naturally” and 1964’s raucous “I’ve Got a Tiger By the Tail” made it clear listeners were hungry for it. Owens enjoyed a smattering of chart success well into the ‘70s, but lost momentum when his best friend and Buckaroos guitarist Don Rich died in a motorcycle accident. The sound they concocted together, though, remains profoundly influential, and its legacy has been carried on by numerous artists, including neo-traditionalist Dwight Yoakam, who collaborated with Owens for the 1988 hit single “Streets of Bakersfield.”

One of the most popular artists in modern country music, Vince Gill is famous for his top-notch songwriting, world-class guitar playing and warm, soaring tenor, all wrapped up in a quick and easy wit. Gill achieved his big breakthrough in 1990 with “When I Call Your Name,” which won both the Country Music Association’s (CMA) Single and Song of the Year awards as well as a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance, Male. Since then, Gill has won 17 additional CMA Awards, 22 Grammy Awards, and eight Academy of Country Music Awards. In 1991, Gill was invited to become a member of The Grand Ole Opry, and in 2007 was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 2012 he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A gifted songwriter, Gill’s compositions earned him entry into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 and was awarded the prestigious BMI Icon award in 2014. Throughout his career he has released 20 albums, sold over 30 million albums, and charted 45 singles. Always considering himself a musician above all else, Gill has over the years been a part of some iconic bands including Pure Prairie League, The Cherry Bombs, and The Time Jumpers. In 2017 Vince was asked to join the Eagles on the road and continues to be a part of that historic band’s tour.

Initially formed in post-surf backyard jam sessions on the North Shore of Oahu, Twin Fin has become one of Hawaii's most electrifying rock bands.
