"Most artists make music to move bodies...I make music to move mountains!" -OCHE Igboyi. In his latest release, Balenciaga, he chronicles the seminal journey of slain runner Ahmaud Arbery. Rather than talk about what the death of Arbery meant to the world, or focus on the impact of his murder, Igboyi looks further into what might have played out in Arbery's mind as he took his last jog. How would Arbery want to be remembered? What would he think about the life he had lived up until that point? How did he envision his own importance in the struggle? These are the questions that Igboyi explores.
Balenciaga is just the latest installment of Igboyi's cerebral hip hop voyage. Previously known as iLL (iLL Holiday) of award-winning Christian Hip Hop trio, DaFilled. He stood out in the group by taking a slightly off center approach to addressing universal concepts. While many gospel rap collectives were battling over whether more or less direct religious content aligned with the purpose of their genre, Igboyi and his group wrestled with concepts of how to more effectively speak with people rather than at them.
Igboyi's knack for storytelling pulls the listener into his world is prominently on display in Balenciaga, but may not be his only tool for connection. In 'Feel Good' and 'Feel Good Too' Igboyi asks important questions of both believers and the uninitiated. OCHE Igboyi's music is a well-deserved recess from today's class of hip hop.
