Sean Paul
In the early 2000s, American radio was hungry for new sounds, and one of the most successful crossover acts was a young man from Jamaica who had once—improbably—been a professional water polo player. Sean Paul, born Sean Paul Francis Henriques in Kingston in 1973, had left sports to take up the microphone in the mid-’90s, developing a driving, authoritative sound anchored by his surprisingly accessible and monotonal toasting. Even if you couldn’t decipher the patois, you got the gist of his sentiments, which fell somewhere between “Get on the dance floor” and “I love girls.” His first album, 2000’s Stage One, earned him some recognition, collecting singles dating from 1996, but it was 2002’s Dutty Rock that pushed him into global superstardom, with the huge hits “Get Busy” (an eternal dance-floor filler that, two decades later, found a new audience on TikTok) and “Gimme the Light”. In 2005, The Trinity cemented the singer’s status as the dancehall collaborator for artists like Beyoncé and Rihanna. Though he charted less as the decade progressed, he continued to release his trademark boundary-crossing music and experienced a resurgence in 2016 with several massively successful collaborations, including “Cheap Thrills” with Sia and “No Lie” with Dua Lipa. The world, it seemed, had caught back up to Sean Paul. As dancehall riddims inspired reggaetón, infiltrated Afrobeats and even influenced pop artists like Justin Bieber and Drake in the ensuing years, Paul found himself again in demand, giving star turns on tracks with artists including Migos and J Balvin.

Read moreWaylon Jennings
The essence of outlaw country—hard living, broken hearts, and a life led rambling, among other things—is distilled in Waylon Jennings’ booming baritone. Born in Texas in 1937, Jennings dropped out of school at 16 with the dream of becoming a musician, and got his chance when rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Buddy Holly tapped him to play bass in his band. After giving up his seat for the infamous 1959 plane ride that would end the lives of Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens, Jennings established the honky-tonk roots of what would become his signature sound in the ‘60s with songs like the toe-tapping “Only Daddy That’ll Walk the Line.” But it wasn’t until the ‘70s that Jennings became the outlaw icon—a scruffy, towering cowboy in a wide-brimmed hat—of legend. Jennings made this version of himself known with 1973’s Honky Tonk Heroes, a record dense with electrifying twang and hardcore country that stood in stark contrast to the genre’s mainstream offerings in Nashville. While Music City might’ve had its issues with Jennings, he was in good company with songwriters, including fellow Texan Willie Nelson, a longtime collaborator he eventually joined in country supergroup Highwaymen—alongside Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson—in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Jennings passed away in the early 2000s, but his influence looms large over country music, particularly in its 2010s outlaw resurgence through artists like Sturgill Simpson and Chris Stapleton.

Los Angeles indie electro unit Capital Cities got their start writing commercial jingles before shifting their bright and catchy songwriting talents into the world of pop. Synth-forward, horn-backed hits "Safe and Sound" and "Kangaroo Court" became viral favorites, landing their 2013 debut, In a Tidal Wave of Mystery, on the Billboard 200.
Founding composers/songwriters Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian first came together in 2011 via Craigslist, working as commercial jingle writers. Shortly after meeting, they released an EP online, which included the song "Safe and Sound," an upbeat mash of programming and melody that shot to the top of the charts and keeps going viral.
Their full-length debut, In a Tidal Wave of Mystery, arrived on Capitol Records in June 2013. The band's innovative video for "Safe and Sound" earned them an MTV Moonman and Grammy nomination. They further expanded their audience in 2014, hopping onto Katy Perry's Prism tour as show openers.
Capital Cities returned in 2018 with their sophomore full-length Solarize, which featured rapper Rick Ross on "Girl Friday."
In 2025, they released A Hurricane Of Frowns, a massive collection of new music, unreleased rarities, remixes and covers. With alternative versions of songs from In A Tidal Wave of Mystery, including the experimental gem "Farrah Fawcett Hair" featuring André 3000, co-frontman/keyboardist Sebu calls it "a journey into a twisted, parallel universe."

With inventive re-imaginings of the reggae-splashed, hook-heavy soul popularized by acts like Sean Paul and Sean Kingston in the early half of the 21st century's first decade, Virgin Islands-born singer Iyaz (born Keidran Jones) swiftly built up a hearty cult following on MySpace. Kingston, in the process of forming his own Time Is Money label, stumbled upon Iyaz's site and snapped up the 21-year-old singer as the maiden signee of his new imprint. Iyaz's debut single, "Replay," an iPod name-checking musical stew that added splashes of classical and electronica to his usual island pop, soared to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 2009. The song, written by Iyaz and R.City, topped the U.K., Australian, and Swiss pop charts and eventually went platinum -- several times over -- in the U.S. Follow-up single "Solo" it reached number three in the U.K. followed boy third single “So Big”-- but it set up the June 2010 release of Replay. After extensive touring and a change of labels, Iyaz released Aurora only in Japan.
